Who are we?

• The Department for Education, Children and Young People is responsible for education from the Early Years to Year 12 and Vocational Education and Training (VET) delivered through schools and senior secondary schools as well as adult learning (Libraries Tasmania).
• This includes all public pre-Kinder, Kindergarten, primary, secondary and senior secondary education around the state, including education delivered flexibly or via eLearning.
• There are 12 Child and Family Learning Centres which are places where families with children aged from birth to five years can go to access a range of services.
• Libraries Tasmania is a statewide network that gives Tasmanians access to library services, research and information, adult literacy support, community learning, online access, and archive and heritage services.
• There are just under 200 Tasmanian Government schools and senior secondary schools around the state.
• The Department for Education, Children and Young People provides many services to support the social and emotional wellbeing of students as well as their learning needs.
• We require our teachers to be qualified, of good character and registered with the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board.
• The Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) Act 2013 requires persons undertaking work in a regulated activity to be registered every 3 years.
• Our website www.decyp.tas.gov.au has a wide range of information and resources that can further help you to prepare your child for starting school.
• All schools work within a Learning Service.  Learning Service offices are based in the Southern and Northern regions of the state and provide support to schools.  They are your next point of contact after your school principal.

Where can we learn?

• Government primary and secondary schools are located in designated geographical areas called intake areas. Your child is entitled to attend your local school in the home area in which you live.
• The Tasmanian eSchool can provide access to alternative education provision if isolation, medical advice, pregnancy and travel interfere with attendance at school.
• Your local school principal or your Learning Service can advise you about your child’s eligibility to access the Tasmanian eSchool.
