At-Capacity schools

Tasmanian Government schools at and nearing enrolment capacity.

At-capacity schools cannot accept applications for out-of-area enrolment.  This is to ensure that the school can accommodate all local students. This includes also those who need to enrol throughout the school year.

All local or ‘in-area’ students are guaranteed a place at the school. To find your local, ‘in-area’ school, visit the Find Your Local School page.

What is school capacity?

School capacity is the amount of physical space that is available for students to use for classroom-based learning.

School capacity is based on all available general and specialist learning areas including:

  • science, music and art areas
  • other areas that may be used as a general learning area.

The following areas are excluded from the capacity calculation:

  • media
  • design and technology
  • hospitality
  • commercial cooking
  • library
  • gymnasium
  • multi-purpose hall
  • support areas.

How is school capacity determined?

School capacity is determined using a standard, nationally-applied formula.  A school’s capacity is calculated by multiplying the number of learning areas (spaces that can be used as classrooms) by the average class size of 25 FTEs (full time equivalent students).
