FAQs – Establishing the New Department

Why are functions from Communities Tasmania transitioning to new homes in the State Service?

In February 2022 the Tasmanian Government announced that the functions of the Department of Communities Tasmania will move to new homes within the State Service between July to October 2022.

The change is designed to maximise shared resources and capabilities, and to align Government services to best meet the ongoing needs of our Tasmanian community.

Why is the new Department being created?

The Department for Education, Children and Young People is a name that truly reflects what we are working for and how we will work to strengthen and meet our responsibility to children and young people.

Since the Tasmanian Government announced the establishment of a new department, the Department of Education and Department of Communities Tasmania have been working together to create an organisation that delivers for all Tasmanians.

Which departments will form the new Department for Education, Children and Young People?

Children, Youth and Families; the Tasmanian Autism Diagnostic Services; and some staff from Office of the Secretary and Corporate Services from the Department of Communities Tasmania will transition to the new Department along with the Department of Education.

Our work is to ensure that all children in Tasmania are known, safe, well, and learning; it’s the thread that binds us all together.

When will the new Department begin to operate?

The new Department will be established on 1 October 2022.

How will the change affect me?

All services provided by both departments will remain accessible and in operation for existing and new clients. Come 1 October 2022 it will be business as usual. The contact person you have now, will still be your contact person then. If there are any changes in the future will be communicated to you before they occur.

I use a service that is provided by the Department of Communities Tasmania (and will be transitioning to the new Department). How do I access this service from 1 October 2022?

All services offered by Department of Communities that are transitioning to the new Department will remain and continue into the new Department.

Any changes will be communicated to affected services users directly and updated contact information will be posted on our website.

I use a service that is in the Department of Education. How do I access this service from 1 October 2022?

All services offered by Department of Education will remain and continue into the new Department.

Any changes will be communicated to affected services users directly and updated contact information will be posted on our website.

Will the change disrupt services?

No. We are working to minimise disruption to services over the transition. Service delivery and supports will continue as normal.

Will physical locations of offices change?

Services will stay in the locations that they are in now. If there are any changes to the location of services or how you contact them, we will let you know before anything changes.

Will the websites of services and supports I am using change?

The Department for Education, Children and Young People will have a new website from 1 October 2022. The new web address is www.decyp.tas.gov.au

Our DECYP website will include all services from the previous Department of Education and services for Children, Youth and Families and the Tasmanian Autism Diagnostic Services, from the previous Department of Communities Tasmania.
Redirects will be in place from both the previous Department of Education and Department of Communities Tasmania’s websites for some time, however all bookmarks should be updated.

All services will remain available and operational and come 1 October 2022 it will be business as usual. The contact person you have now, will still be your contact person then. If there are any changes in the future these will be communicated to you before they occur.

What will collaborative practice look like in the new department – how will we ensure children are always front and centre?

By combining our strengths and knowledge from both departments we ensure all children and young people are known, safe, well and engaged in learning.
