Placing a child for adoption

Adoption is one option parents can consider if they feel unable to care for a child themselves.  It is a legal process where legal rights and responsibilities are permanently transferred from birth parents to adoptive parents.  The adoption process in Tasmania is governed by the Adoption Act 1988 and the Adoption Regulations 2016.

If you are considering placing your child for adoption, you will be relinquishing all legal rights to and connections with your child.

If you would like to talk to someone about adoption, you can contact us to make an appointment with an Adoption Officer.

The Adoption Officer can help you consider options for the care of the child and help you decide whether adoption is for you.  If you decide to proceed with placing your child for adoption, the Adoption Officer will also be able to guide you through the process, including all the necessary legal requirements.
